42nd anniversary of Seychelles Independence: Commonwealth SG to be guest of honour |21 June 2018

Patricia Scotland, Secretary General of the Commonwealth, will be the guest of honour on the occasion of the country’s 42nd Independence anniversary on June 29.

The department of foreign affairs made the announcement yesterday through a communiqué on its website.

The Rt Honourable Patricia Scotland is the first woman and the sixth Commonwealth Secretary General and she was appointed to this position on November 267, 2015.

The communiqué from the department of foreign affairs adds that this announcement represents the budding relationship Seychelles continues to have with the Commonwealth, an organisation that is vibrantly made up of over 2.2 billion people of all ethnicities and faith that aspires for world peace and international understanding.

Seychelles joined the Commonwealth at the cusp of our independence in 1976 and the organisation has since provided us with continuous support and guidance.

That communiqué adds that we share with the Commonwealth so many of our core constitutional and cultural values, showcased by our pride in our ‘boiling-pot’ style of social stratification.

Rooted in its manifesto from as far back as 1870, the Commonwealth is guided by the notion that “strong partnerships establish strong democracies”, and Seychelles also upholds similar principles.

“We celebrate this important milestone in our young nation’s journey towards prosperity in partnership with the Commonwealth, a reliable and faithful partner in our demarche to find solutions to the challenges of the small island developing states (Sids),” writes the communiqué.
