National Day celebrations - Preparations in final stages |27 June 2018

Preparations for the three major events on the National Day celebration calendar are in the final stages and all will be ready on time for Friday, the event coordinators have confirmed.

The National Celebrations Committee (NCC), headed by Designated Minister Macsuzy Mondon, is responsible to organise the National Show, the traditional military parade, along with the musical and cultural show which will take place just after.

Three coordinators have been appointed to oversee the planning of the events and they are all satisfied with the progress, two days prior to the events.

Franky Laporte is the coordinator for the National Show, while Gerard Lafortune and John Etienne are in charge of the military parade, the musical show and the cultural display respectively.

The 4th National Show will be officially launched on Friday at 10am and will go on until 6pm on Sunday. On Friday and Saturday the event will close at 1am.

Mr Laporte said 145 participants, including corporate companies, non-governmental organisations, along with assorted companies and small entrepreneurs have confirmed their presence.

He explained that with the growing trend and innovation in business, the National Show brings new things every year and this year will be no exception.

Mr Laporte added that in terms of utilities which are the responsibility of the NSC, everything is almost ready, including electricity and water supply, along with all the stalls, partitions and other infrastructure to host the event.

He said the final part is the responsibility of the participants who will design and furbish their stalls.

In terms of space, Mr Laporte said they have managed to fit in all the big businesses, while the assorted companies and small entrepreneurs were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

For entertainment, Mr Laporte said three stages have been set up in different places to provide continuous entertainment throughout the event.

He added that the National Show has been designed for every member of the family and encouraged everyone to come and see.

For the military parade, Mr Lafortune said the rehearsals began three months ago and it is now in its final stage, with the final grand rehearsal taking place tomorrow.

Mr Lafortune said this year’s parade will feature 20 platoons – 17 local and three foreign – along with a flypast which is a ceremonial flight by a group of aircraft and a parachute display.

The 17 local platoons will feature the different military and police branches, along with various youth organisations, including scouts and young citizens.

The foreign platoons are from France, Mauritius and India.

Mr Lafortune is urging members of the public to be seated by 5.15pm.

The musical and cultural show entitled ‘Mon Pei’ will feature over 325 dancers and singers, its coordinator John Etienne has said.

He said he wanted to bring something which illustrates all the aspects of the Seychellois culture and history.

Mr Etienne explained that the genre of the show will be music, choreography and special effects, among others.

He also added that the concert will be a ‘made in Seychelles’ completely, as it is being produced completely by Seychellois professionals.

Mr Etienne is getting the help of choreographer Joel Rose and music composer Ralf Amesbury, while Patrick Victor is the event’s assistant director.

Meanwhile, the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) has announced that it will adjust its schedule during the celebration period.

On Friday, additional buses displaying ‘STAD LINITE’ will operate from the different districts to the stadium as from 10am up to 4pm and the services will depend on the load.

Shuttle service will also be available from Victoria Bus Terminal to Stad Linite and back between the same times, boarding on Platform S.

Drop off for buses from North, Central and West Mahé will be at Ste Anne jetty, while those from South will drop off passengers at Stad Linite’s South Gate facing the Highway.

All buses will depart Stad Linite at 9pm to the different districts.

Boarding for passengers heading South will be at Stad Linite’s South gate, while passengers heading North, Central and West bound passengers will board at Ste Anne Jetty.

All the buses for National Day are paid services.
