Vannswet: An exhibition for the season |28 June 2018

The Arterial Network gallery is yet again hosting an art exhibit featuring artists residing in Seychelles whose work have taken inspiration from the theme 'vannswet'.

The exhibit was officially opened during a brief ceremony held at the gallery at Eden Plaza last Thursday evening.

The theme vannswet, or the south east monsoon, was translated through more than 15 multi-media artworks including paintings, sculptures, and for the first time ever, poetry.

Christine Harter, the exhibition's curator, said that the theme was chosen because it was one of the interesting aspects that best represented the country and which everybody could relate to.

“It's the season we are in right now which is characterised by rough seas, cooler weather and a period of drought right at the end,” Ms Harter said.

“The fishermen don't like it very much because fish becomes scarce while the sailors and those who surf love it because they have more wind to work with.”

Ms Harter also explained that Arterial Network decided to exhibit poetry for the very first time because the network is actively seeking to engage artists from other disciplines.

“In this instance members of Bling Bling Poetry, who include Raspyek and Stephanie Joubert, have written poems that visitors can see exhibited among the paintings.”

Kevin Perrine, whose poem 'Mon Anvi Ekrir' was also on display, said that Arterial Network's initiative to include poets is well-appreciated since it brings different artists together on the same platform.

“Paintings and visual art have been combined with poetry in this exhibition and it is an opportunity for artists from both sides to appreciate one another’s works."

Mr Perrine said that his poem was written a few weeks before he was made aware of the 'vannswet' exhibition but felt that the poem coincidentally acclimated to the theme.

Among exhibiting artists are well known Charles Dodo, Nigel Henri and Egbert Marday along with new and upcoming ones such as Amy Wright.

The exhibit will be on display for the next six months after which another exhibition by international British artist, Laura Jacobs, will take precedence.

The exhibition is sponsored by Penlac and Chaka Brothers.
