Ambassador wants to boost US-Seychelles economic ties |04 July 2018

A top goal of the Ambassador of the United States of America (US) to Seychelles, David Reiner, is to grow the bilateral economic relationship between the two countries, thus encourage more investment and much more trade to benefit businesses in both countries.

Mr Reiner made the statement on Monday, during a special gathering hosted to commemorate the US’s 242nd anniversary of independence which is today, July 4.

The ceremony held at Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort and Spa at Glacis was attended by Minister for Health Jean-Paul Adam, leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Wavel Ramkalawan, Chief of Staff of the Seychelles People’s Defence Forces (SPDF) Colonel Michael Rosette, members of the diplomatic corps, along with past students and personnel who have benefitted from various training and courses in the US.

Independence Day, also referred to as the Fourth of July or July Fourth, is a federal holiday in the US commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.

The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire.

Mr Reiner said upon presenting his credentials, maritime security was hailed as highly successful endeavour between the two countries.

He noted that the commitment and leadership of the SPDF across the region cannot be overstated.

“You are one of the frontrunners in high seas pirate prosecutions and incarcerations,” he added.

Mr Reiner further added that since 2010, there has been a welcome downward trajectory of piracy activity, due in large part to the effort of the SPDF, through the Seychelles government.

He also noted that to further demonstrate that commitment, Seychelles is home to two vital regional maritime security centres, precisely the National Information Sharing and Coordination Centre and the Regional Centre for Operations Coordination.

“Through our Office of Security Cooperation, our two nations have collaborated on numerous events and trainings such as the Cutlass Express Naval Exercise which enhances maritime security,” added Mr Reiner.

Speaking on shared values by our two countries, Mr Reiner said freedom for all and human trafficking are areas the United States of America is looking forward to engage productively with the government of Seychelles in the coming year.

To conclude, Mr Reiner pledged the support of the American government and people as Seychelles strengthens its economy by diversifying and encouraging investments in traditional and emerging sectors, as well as in the work to move the country forward to consolidate its democracy.

On behalf of the government and people of Seychelles, Minister Adam extended a heartfelt congratulations and sincere wishes for further progress and prosperity to the people of the United States of America.

He noted that as we celebrate the 242nd Independence Day of the United States of America, we are reminded of the fundamental pillars that elevate any country to high levels of democratic practices, respect for institutions, inclusiveness and economic successes.

Minister Adam said despite the geographical distances, Seychelles and the United States of America are very close in proximity, in our determination and commitment to further advance our collaborative efforts to new heights.

“The bridging of gaps between our nations are crucial stepping stones in our efforts to achieve our respective national and global objectives,” he added.

Minister Adam further added that the unity between the two nations, built on shared belief, has further cemented the strong bonds of friendship we have been privileged to enjoy over the 42 years of our official diplomatic engagement.

The guests then joined Minister Adam and Ambassador Reiner in a toast to the lasting friendship between our two nations.

The United States established diplomatic relations with Seychelles in 1976, following Seychelles’ independence from the United Kingdom. The two countries enjoy a history of partnership and cooperation based on shared priorities.

In the Indian Ocean region, the two countries work together to fight piracy and terrorism, strengthen environmental sustainable development, and promote maritime security.
