UniSey organises road show to attract more students |06 July 2018

The University of Seychelles (UniSey) organised a road show yesterday to recruit students and to showcase the different courses on offer thus encouraging them to study in Seychelles.

It also provided the opportunity for discussions on new programmes that will suit the needs of the country.

The road show was to also help raise the visibility of the UniSey, where its officials, stationed around Victoria, were giving out information through leaflets and a one-to-one interaction.

It was destined for the general public, including employers and employees, who would like to join UniSey and further their studies for a greater career path. Application forms were also available for those who wanted to fill in the forms or take them away and return later.

Apart from its main station at Orion Mall and around the central vicinity of Victoria, the road show was also taking place at the Seychelles Trading Company (STC) Hypermarket at Bois De Rose. Staff of the university were being assisted by former students.

The director for marketing at UniSey, Dolivette Chang-Ko, said they wanted to educate the public and change their perception on higher education.

“We want to increase the visibility of the university and show the people out there that higher education is important and that we all can actually get a degree without having to pass through A-Levels or other post-secondary institutions, by coming straight to the university,” she said.

She noted that students could enroll with UniSey for long and short-term programmes both on a full or part-time basis.

“UniSey wants to be a national project whereby we educate the people to realise the importance of education as the catalyst for their future careers,” Ms Chang-Ko added.

The University of Seychelles is internationally recognised and offers certificate, diploma, bachelor’s degree and master certificates courses all of which are affiliated with the University of London, the University of Reunion Island, the University of West Scotland and the IREST of the University Paris 1 Pantheon- Sorbonne.

Geva Remy, who works free-lance in the offshore industry, was a passerby at the UniSey stand at Orion Mall and after her interaction with the staff she said: “I was not aware they were offering part-time courses and instead of I having to go to school full time, I think a part-time course or a distance learning course will suit my position as it will balance with my work and life at home.”

Helping with the dissemination of information, Petra Lesperance, a past student and now working in the marketing department of UniSey, said the benefits she gained from studying here in Seychelles were that she was close to her family for support with no need for adaptation and compared to what she hears about studying abroad, the classes here are smaller with few students and that enabled her for better close communication on one to one with her lecturers.

She took her three-year business administration degree course at UniSey in 2011-2014.

Apart from the road show yesterday, Ms Chang-Ko said that UniSey had all along been doing promotional campaigns at schools and work places and that this will continue in the months to come.

The road show ended in the afternoon.
