Telecommunications Company Airtel Seychelles has once again this year brought its support to local football with a cheque worth R350,000 which will go towards the expenses for the 15th annual Airtel Cup football tournament.

Amadou Dina, Airtel’s Managing Director presented the cheque to Secretary General of the Seychelles Football Federation (SFF) Georges Bibi during a ceremony on Thursday at the company’s headquarters at Providence, in the presence of staff.

On behalf of the SFF, Mr Bibi thanked the telecommunications company for its continuous support towards local football for the past fifteen years.

“I would like to thank Airtel for their involvement in football and the continued loyalty towards the SFF”, Mr Bibi said.

He added that the Airtel Cup is recongnised as a household name where both the clubs and supporters look forward to the tournament.

“Through the help of Airtel, who have never let us down, we will continue to support this tournament and we hope that the relationship remains strong”, further noted Mr Bibi.

Mr Dina said this year is special for the company, as it is celebrating its 20th anniversary of operation in the Seychelles.

He added that he hopes the tournament extends to more than just a competition, but also develops into a celebration.

“It has been a great pleasure to support the SFF and since football is a part of life, it has been our great pleasure to support this way of life”, further added Mr Dina.

He also said they are looking to make the Airtel Cup bigger than just a tournament, thus turning it into a great celebration, so fans can come down and support their teams.

To conclude, Mr Dina said support is a crucial factor, urging on the support from clubs, fans and every one to make the Airtel Cup a great celebration in football.

This year’s competition started on Wednesday, with the first match featuring Foresters against The Lions.

For this year’s competition, the 12 first division teams have been drawn into four groups.

Group A is made up of Côte d’Or, Red Star Defence Forces and La Passe, while Group B features Anse Reunion, St Michel and St Louis. Foresters, Au Cap and The Lions are in group C.

The competition will start on a home and away league basis where the teams will face each other twice in the group stage, with the top two in each group moving to the quarterfinals which will be a cross knock-out.
