Football: Airtel Cup - St Louis, Foresters win, La Passe and Côte D’Or draw |09 July 2018

Foresters defeated Au Cap 2-0 at Stad Linite on Saturday while St Louis sneaked past Anse Reunion on La Digue on Saturday as La Passe and Côte D’Or shared a 1-1 draw on Praslin on the same day.

On Praslin on Friday afternoon, LightStars had to battle back to salvage a 2-2 draw against Revengers.

Foresters beat Au Cap

Mont Fleuri based Foresters beat Au Cap 2-0 to record their second win on the trot in Pool C in a match which began in sombre mood with a minute’s silence in memory of the passing away of the dad of Foresters’ goalie Kitson Cecile.

This match though almost did not kick off as the two teams contested the same colour of stocking with the officials before sanity reigned and the match kicking off a few minutes late.

Au Cap nearly caught Foresters off-guard in the 11th minute with a quickly taken free kick by Ghanaian Jonas Baffoe to his countryman Emmanuel Armah who was miles offside but strangely it was not signaled by assistant referee James Emile.

Armah though made a meal of his shot which was way off target as Foresters, who had their captain Malagasy Leonard Besabotsy back after his proposed switch to La Passe did not materialise, protested to the official.

Francis Nourrice should have opened the scoring two minutes later at the other end from a brilliant through ball by Ugandan Nasser Muzamir but he delayed his shot allowing Marcus Cedras to snuff out the danger.

Au Cap missed an even better chance in the 18th minute when Armah set sup Mederick Jean-Baptiste who had the goal at his mercy but he miscued his shot.

Armah also fluffed his line in the 26th minute as he raced clear from an offside position which was not flagged but he fired over the crossbar.

On the half hour mark, Foresters, who were missing their talisman Ugandan Tony Kizito through suspension, went mightily close as Brandon Labrosse latched onto a through ball to elude goalie Gerald Tirant but he could not squeeze the ball home for a goalless first half.

Foresters took the lead on the hour mark from Joseph Julius’ cross which fell to substitute Tanzanian Hussein Bakary who headed past goalie Tirant in a crowded penalty area for a 1-0 score.

Nourrice should have added a second four minutes later as he burst through on goal but he dithered and was dispossessed by the retreating Au Cap defenders.

In the 67th minute, Au Cap should have drawn level from a lofted free kick by captain Dean Balette in the Foresters’ penalty area but Savio Labiche failed to connect with a free header to waste a gilt edge opportunity.

Au Cap kept pushing for an equaliser and in the 75th minute Armah sent in an inch perfect cross to substitute Oliver Camille whose shot deflected off goalie Elvis Leopold’s gloves into corner.

Foresters though wrapped up the win with the last kick of the match as substitute Martin William bore on goal to stab the ball past goalie Tirant for a 2-0 final result.

The Foresters coach Bryan Bastienne was just pleased with another victory though he felt his team can still do better.

“We still have a lot of work to do though it is very satisfying to win our first two matches which puts us in a strong position in this group,” the Foresters coach said.

As for the Au Cap manager Nichol Dogley, he thinks his team need to bolster their attack to help their cause.

“We must add to our attack line as today we created lots of chances but lacked the poise in front of goal so we are disappointed with the result as our objective was to start off with a win in this competition,” the Au Cap manager related to Sports NATION.

St Louis sneak past Anse Reunion

2017 Airtel cup finalist and league and cup champions St Louis travelled to La Digue to face Anse Reunion in a Pool B match as Basil Hoareau made his debut as coach of the La Digue team.

St Louis though did enough to register a 1-0 victory courtesy of a first half strike by Malagasy Tahiry to boost morale before they face their bitter rivals St Michel on Wednesday in a Pool B match up.

Côte D’Or and La Passe share the spoils

League leaders Côte D’Or had to come from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw against La Passe at the Amitié playing field in a Pool A match on Saturday.

La Passe had gone ahead in this match in the first half with a beautiful free kick by Stan Fanchette for a 1-0 lead at half time.

Côte D’Or though drew level late in the match as Andy Brioche scored to earn his team a hard fought 1-1 draw.

LightStars fight back against Revengers

LightStars fought back from a two goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against neighbours Revengers on Friday afternoon in a Pool D encounter.

Malagasy Aimarthelin gave Revengers -- who are under new coach Malagasy Honore Saindini, the younger brother of La Passe coach Bruno -- a 1-0 lead at half time.

Former Côte D’Or midfielder Patrick Rasaminana added a second for struggling Revengers for a 2-0 advantage.

However LightStars fought back as defender Malagasy Noelson Jeannot reduced the arrears at 1-2 before Renick Esther scored the equaliser to rescue a point for his team in an entertaining 2-2 draw.
