Twelve students from the Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management programme (ADHM) at the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) and four best awardees that graduated last year are to follow a six-month internship in Mauritius.

The 9th cohort of students received their tickets and insurance documents from the principal secretary for tourism, Anne Lafortune, and the assistant scholarship administrator for the Agency for National Human Resource Development (ANHRD), Flavienne Dogley, in a small sending off ceremony held at the academy at La Misère yesterday afternoon.

Present were the principal of the academy, Flavien Joubert, hoteliers, staff members and parents.

It is the first time that the internship programme is being held over six months and Mr Joubert said that next year, the 10th cohort will spend one year on the programme in Mauritius.

Upon their return from the internship programme, the ADHM students will follow another six months internship in the local tourism industry and another year at the academy to qualify for an ADHM certificate.

They will then continue their studies for another eighteen months for a degree certificate at Shannon College of Hotel Management in Ireland. The past four best awardees will return to their work places or could apply to join the ADHM programme.

The twelve ADHM students making the trip to Mauritius as part of their training programme are Jahny Athanase, Carol David, Ryan Dine, Agnes Gerry, May-Ruth Fanny, Kerrie-Anne Joubert, Annie Julienne, Richard Rose, Farah Santache, Gilbert Sanguyon, Clara Sicobo and Karen Songoire.

It is to be noted that the past four best awardees won their tickets for the internship training as announced by President Danny Faure last year. He rewarded four other best awardees who graduated from post secondary institutions, with scholarships through the ANHRD, apart from winning the President’s Cup as best overall winner. The four past STA graduates from last year are Shirley Boniface, Damien Esther, Prisheila Fanchette and Anthony Servina. ANHRD confirmed that the fifth student is currently on an overseas scholarship.

In Mauritius, fourteen students will do their internship training at the Constance Belle Mare Plage Hotel while the other two will be posted at the Four Seasons Hotel. The students will undergo training in four departments namely -  front office, accommodation, kitchen, bar and restaurant.

Two other students from the ADHM programme, Dereck Gill and Ken William, are currently in India on a six- month internship programmme at the Hilton Conrad Hotel in Pune. It is the first time that Seychellois students attend such a hotel training programme in India.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Joubert told the parents not to worry as the students will be in good hands, will be covered by health insurance and will be given comfortable accommodation.

He advised the students that apart from enjoying themselves, they have to be serious with their studies and they should make sure that they look after one other and help each other whenever any issues arise.

On behalf of her colleagues, Clara Sicobo thanked everyone for helping them to achieve and make it possible to proceed for their internship and promised to do their best. They leave on July 27.
