Dr Choi advises chiropractic treatment for rising issues of musculoskeletal system |13 July 2018

Repetition wears you out; ask the jockeys and the golfers

People of all ages in Seychelles, including children, have increasingly been reported by Dr Choi - chiropractic doctor - to be presenting with musculoskeletalproblems at his clinic, based at Eden Island Plaza. The main symptoms include headache, neck pain/stiffness, pain in the spine, low back, hip, knee, & ankle/foot, degenerative Spondylosis, Sciatica and tilted pelvic bone.

Dr Choi explains that the musculoskeletal system has 80% volume of the total body and provides all movement and metabolic actions. The nerves system (central, peripheral, autonomic) are passed through the spine that controls the whole body system.

“If you have been suffering from any spine problems for a long time, it could lead to various and serious disorders. If you have any joints dysfunction, this causes limited motion and pain, and can gradually lead to various other problems. All actions of the body are provided through the spine and muscles, hence why good balance, condition and normal function of the musculoskeletal system is very important”.

According to Dr Choi, in addition to bad posture, the main causes of musculoskeletal problems among the local population are overweight and obesity, noting that the rates of obesity in the country are alarming.

He points out that overweight and obesity are mainly caused by overeating and a lack of exercise, noting that people are increasingly walking less, using their cars more, sitting for longer periods, and spending a lot of time on their electronic devices.

“Overweight and obesity are related to a number of other health issues, such as hypertension and diabetes, which cause a lot of stress on the spine and joints – an area that chiropractic doctors are specialised in,” explains Dr Choi.

Chiropractic manipulation is a form of alternative medicine which involves diagnosis of conditions which affect the body and musculoskeletal system, as well as their associated issues such as stroke, back/neck pain, headaches, slipped discs and joint arthritis.

Dr Choi explains that chiropractors usually have the academic degree of ‘Doctor of Chiropractic’, which is awarded after an average of 8 years of university training. They are professionals who diagnose conditions that affect the body and neuro-musculoskeletal disorders without drug and surgery; in contrast, a medical doctor is a professional who uses drugs and surgery.

Chiropractors use their hands to relieve pain in different areas of the body, focusing on the entire body, ‘adjusting’ to correct alignment, and improving how the body works. Some practitioners can also give nutritional/lifestyle advice, and provide acupuncture as well as physiotherapy services.

Trained and licensed practitioners make structural changes to the bony framework of the skeleton for two main reasons:

  1. If the skeletal framework is misaligned, the body cannot function correctly.
  2. To ensure that the normal muscular/neurological functions of the body act as normally as possible, to ensure metabolic and functional efficiency by the autonomic nervous system that passes through a healthy spine. The practitioners endeavour to encourage the body to correct itself.

The equine population and Tiger Woods swear by the treatment that pops and cracks your joints. According to Dr Choi, chiropractic treatment can help with sports injuries while enhancing performance in sports /other physical activities.

He adds that it is a very popular treatment for sports injuries in America, with some wealthy people like Tiger Woods, employing their own private doctors. Some people may be surprised to learn that even some members of the equine racing population receive chiropractic treatment to help maintain good musculoskeletal conditions.
