Nurses’ association gets new headquarters |16 July 2018

The Nurses Association of Seychelles (Nars) has opened its new headquarters located in the KIA complex building opposite the bus shelter next to Printec Press Holding (PPH) building, Mont Fleuri.

It was the president of Nars, Rosie Bistoquet, who had the honour of cutting the ribbon to officially open the headquarters on Saturday morning.

Located on the first floor of the building, the one-room apartment will be used as a meeting place for its members for discussions and other activities related to nursing.

The office was blessed by Father Patrick Mabiana from the St Thérèse church, Plaisance, in the presence of the honorary member of Nars, Peggy Vidot and members of the association.

Mrs Bistoquet said the association is very happy to have been able to move out from the premises of their employers, the Ministry of Health, and to acquire its own office, something it had been fighting for for a long time.

“After 42 years as an association, it’s the first time that we have really moved out especially from the Ministry of Health. As most of us are employees of the ministry now we are in a better position to not only offer operational tasks but also support the nurses in relation to whatever situations they are in, for counselling or any issues that may arise. At least they will know they have a physical address to put forward their issues,” she said, addressing the gathering.

The secretary of the association, Monica Servina, said that ethically now the executive members, who all work for the Ministry of Health, can now separate their daily work from that of the association which will be done in their new office.

“This office will allow our members to feel more at ease to come and discuss their issues, in a place where they are not employed,” she said.

The office will be operational daily during the week from 8am to 4pm.

Mrs Servina said that in future, the office will also assist the public on certain matters such as those seeking to employ qualified nurse as health care workers.

It will also be open for young people who would like to join the nursing profession to come and seek information and guidance on the profession as it will be equipped with reading materials.

Mrs Servina also said that since the nurses’ march earlier this year to make people aware of their worth in the health sector, the association and the ministry are on good terms at the moment whereby a platform has been established where meetings are held regularly to address nursing issues.

Nars was founded in 1976 as a non-governmental organisation with the aim of representing and looking into the concerns of nurses and midwives in Seychelles. It was registered as an association on May 31, 1977 and thus becoming an autonomous, recognised and valued professional body. Apart from nursing advocacy, the mission of the association is also to facilitate and support the nurses in their professional development that will enable them to give quality nursing care services in Seychelles.
