36-year-old man sentenced for drug trafficking |19 July 2018

David Baker, a 36-year-old self-employed man of Mont Fleuri, has been sentenced by the Supreme Court for the offence of trafficking in a controlled drug of 532.I grammes of cannabis resin (hashish).

Baker was imposed the following sentences by Judge Gustave Dodin who was chairing the court session:

-           1 year imprisonment suspended for 3 years with condition that the convict does not commit any similar offence within that 3 years.

-           a fine of R30,000, in default of not paying that fine a sentence of 1 year imprisonment would be activated.

-           that the passport of the convict be returned to him.

-           Immigration authorities to be notified that any travel restrictions imposed on the convict has been revoked and he can be issued with new travel documents.

Baker has been given six months to make full payment of the fine and that the cash bail of R20,000 which he paid for his bail after he was arrested for the offence he committed in this case be seized and paid as part of the fine against him.

Baker was arrested by officers of the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (formerly NDEA) on October 2, 2011 in possession of the said drugs.
