A book outlining radiology cases seen at the Sheikh Khalifa Diagnostic Centre of the Seychelles Hospital were yesterday handed over to the Ministry of Health by the Chinese embassy.

The Chinese ambassador to Seychelles, Yu Jingsong and the author Dr Sun Zhanguo, a radiologist who forms part of the Chinese volunteer doctors at the Seychelles Hospital, presented 50 copies of the books to the Minister for Health, Jean-Paul Adam in the presence of a delegation from the embassy and health staff.

The book titled ‘Radiology Cases – Image Interpretation and Diagnostic Essentials’ provides a basic yet in depth exploration of the radiological field in Seychelles through 403 cases. These are divided in 8 chapters which provide a short history and highlights clinical information in a format that is easily comprehensible.

Radiology is a multifaceted branch of medicine which makes the use of beams (such as X-rays) in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Sometimes diagnosis in the field of radiology can be quite complicated.

Dr Sun hopes the book will simplify the process of looking at and interpreting the images in immediate circumstances as well as assist junior clinicians in expanding their knowledge on local radiology cases.

“It is essential for clinical doctors to master some basic radiology knowledge and skills. The book will allow more local doctors to be sent to the radiology section to get short training,” Dr Sun said, explaining the benefits that the book will have for his colleagues.

Learning about different areas of radiology such as CT Scans, MRI’s, Ultrasounds, X-rays and mammograms will be easier for clinicians.

The book provides interpretations through different images taken during consultations over the past two years at the Radiology Unit in the Sheikh Kalifah Diagnostic Centre.

Dr Olena Kovalska, consultant-in-charge at the Radiology Department, also stressed on the difference that the book will make in their daily practice especially with cases that require immediate diagnosis and management.

“This book takes a teaching approach which can be easily understood and will simplify the process of interpreting images, for every day cases but also for those that are at times sensitive,” Dr Olena said.

Before the ceremony the book was submitted to the Ministry of Health Ethics Committee as well as an additional peer-review. It will be distributed at the Radiology Unit and the library of the Seychelles Hospital.
