NCC’s sub-office on Praslin closes, but it’s business as usual |20 July 2018

The sub-office of the National Council for Children (NCC) on Praslin, which is manned by one psychologist, is closed for almost two months, but NCC says it is business as usual for parents and children of the inner islands.

Located in the Horizon Complex at Baie Ste Anne, the office has its fair share of children who require the service for various issues that often parents feel helpless when faced with such situations.

These include children who have suffered trauma or grief, but also behavioural problems such as anger.

“Usually the psychologist visits schools, is constantly in contact with school management and counsellors and conduct therapy and counselling with children accompanied by their parents at the office on a daily basis,” says Gerard Lim Sam, who is responsible for the psychology and counselling section at NCC, along with three other staff members.

The sub-office on Praslin has been in existence for more than ten years and works alongside other services such as social affairs department.

In order not to leave the children and parents in abeyance while the officer goes on leave, NCC will be sending staff regularly to the island.

“We will try our best with our own workload to fill up the void by travelling to Praslin on Thursdays and Fridays,” says Mr Lim Sam.

Parents and teachers who require the free counselling services will have to contact the head office of NCC on 4283900 to book their appointments.
