Inquiry into the death of prisoner Steve Khan |21 July 2018

‘Deceased prisoner was given proper medical attention’

Court of Appeal Judge Bernardin Renaud has submitted the report of his inquiry into the death of Steve Jeffery Khan, a prisoner who died during the evening of Sunday January 21, 2018 while in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Seychelles Hospital.

Under the Inquiry Act, President Faure had summoned Judge Renaud to form a commission of inquiry to look into the circumstances of the death of Mr Khan who was serving a prison sentence.

A communiqué from the Seychelles Prisons Service then had said that Steve Jeffrey Khan had been admitted for medical care weeks before his death to address his failing health.

Speaking on some of his findings, Judge Renaud told the press that Mr Khan was well medically treated at the Montagne Posée prison and likewise he was given proper medical care at the Seychelles Hospital.

“The only failure on the part of the prison authority in the incident was to inform the family of Mr Khan’s admittance to the Seychelles Hospital,” said Mr Renaud, who noted that Mr Khan was on drugs in prison.

Judge Renaud acknowledged the drug problem in the prison and highlighted that the prison authority has done and is still doing a lot to curb the flow of drugs in prison and he has also made some recommendations on how to go about this.

Judge Renaud said he has made twelve recommendations to government in the report.

The details of the report will made public in due course after being acted upon by government.
