Third African Youth Games in Algeria |24 July 2018

Female lifter Chakira Rose triple bronze medallist

 

Female weightlifter Chakira Rose has won three bronze medals in the +63kg weight category at the ongoing third African Youth Games taking place in Algeria.

After heaving 55kg in snatch, Rose finished with 70kg in the clean & jerk for an Olympic total of 125kg.

Egyptian Rania Azat (Egypt) won the three gold medals ‒ 92kg in snatch and 112kg in clean & jerk for an Olympic total of 204kg.

Hind Teurki of host country Algeria picked up three silver medals ‒ 60kg (snatch) and 75kg (clean & jerk) for an Olympic total of 135kg.

Meanwhile, in cycling, Rupert Oredy clocked 33 minutes 12.97 seconds (33:12.97) to take ninth position in the 22.48km individual time trial, averaging a speed of 40.7km per hour.

His time was 2:50.77 slower than that of race winner and gold medallist Youssef Abouel Hassan of Egypt (30:22.20).

The silver medal went to Algerian Aissa Lebsir (31:09.31) and EthiopianTeklehaymanot Kbrab Tesfay took the bronze in 31:16.44.

Twenty-three cyclists completed the race.

Oredy was not supposed to take part in the individual time trial, but did so as the equipment of the cyclist listed for the event got lost.

The Seychelles delegation in Algeria is being led by Norbert Dogley, chef de mission, and the country’s athletes are taking part in nine of the 30 sports activities ‒ athletics, badminton, cycling, judo, table tennis, triathlon, swimming, sailing and weightlifting.

The African Youth Games are an international multi-sport event held every four years to complement the current All-Africa Games. The first games were hosted by Rabat, Morocco.

The idea for the African Youth Games came in 2006, but the very first African Youth Games only occurred in 2010.
