African Weightlifting Championship Seven lifters at the African Championships |11 August 2018

Seven lifters and five officials are in Mahébourg, Mauritius to take part in the African Weightlifting Championships.

Some of the best weightlifters from around the African continent will meet in the competition with a chance to take part in the World Championships.

Lifters Katsia Telemaque (53kg), Chakira Rose (+75kg), Daryl Riaze (62kg), Rick Confiance (69kg), Angelo Servina (77kg), Hansel Bristol (85kg) and Sirous Farabeau (94kg) arrived in Mauritius on Thursday evening. Accompanying them are coaches William Dixie and Reginald Estro who have been working closely with the lifters in preparation for this competition.

Terrence Dixie is the team leader, while Seychelles Weightlifting Federation chairman Robert Rose will also act as a referee alongside Frank Accouche.

Rose has high hopes for the competition and explains that it is a good preparation of the 10th Indian Ocean Island Games which are set to take place in Mauritius next year.

“We’re here to give it our all. I expect a great performance from the athletes we have chosen and I believe they can all return with a medal. This competition will also act as a preparation for us as we will get a good idea of what the atmosphere is like, and what the opponents have to offer,” said chairman Rose.

The competition was set to begin yesterday and will end on August 17.
