Yachting: Sixth Indian Ocean Cup 2018 |13 August 2018

Julie, Labrosse, Payet gold medallists

Local sailors Allan Julie (Laser standard), Dominique Labrosse (Laser 4.7) and Rebekah Payet (Optimist) climbed onto the highest step of the medals podium on Saturday after winning their respective classes at the Sixth Indian Ocean Cup 2018 yachting competition which ended on Friday.

In total Seychelles won five medals – three gold, one silver and one bronze – at the competition which took place at the Base Nautique des Mascareignes, Le Port, in Reunion. The team were welcomed back yesterday by youth and sports principal secretary Fabian Palmyre and members of the Seychelles Yachting Association.

Julie dominated the Laser Standard class, finishing ahead of his only opponent, Mauritian Kevin Seebaluck, after winning all the races.

In fact, Julie has won the Laser Standard class gold medal for a sixth time.

It was a different scenario for Labrosse in the Laser 4.7 class as he had to fight his way up the ranking.

It was only on day five of the regatta that Labrosse, Optimist gold medallist in Mauritius last year, managed to top the group, sneaking past Mauritian Hemsley Lim Sik Fang who finished second overall.

Jordan Emrit also from Mauritius finished third overall in the group, ahead of Samantha Faure who was ranked fourth.

In the girls’ Optimist class, Payet finished first ahead of compatriot Jasmine Monthy who was the group’s runner-up.

Sawsana Fakir Le Bars of Reunion took the third overall spot ahead of Seychelles’ other contestant in the group, Stephanie Lalande who finished fourth overall.

In the boys’ Optimist group, Seychellois Dean Mathiot ended the regatta in the third overall position for the bronze, ahead of teammate Fabio Bertola Thevenon who finished fourth.

Seychelles’ other sailors in the group were Loïc D’Offay who finished eighth overall and Anthony Toussaint who could only manage a 14th position.

Django Tortosa of Reunion was the group’s winner.

David Madeleine competed in the Laser Radial group at the regatta and he finished fourth overall.

Aurelien Barthelemy of Reunion won the group ahead of compatriot Mathis Guessard.
