Weightlifting: African Senior Championship Rick Confiance, Chakira Rose silver medallists |16 August 2018

Three bronze medals for Daryl Riaze

Seychellois lifters were yet to lift a gold medal at theongoing African Senior Weightlifting Championships at the Pointe-Jérôme Youth Center in Mahebourg, Mauritius and it remained to be seen if Sirous Farabeau and Hansel Bristol could have the honour yesterday.

Other than the African Senior Weightlifting Championships, the Seychellois athletes are also competing in the Mauritius International Open which is taking place simultaneously.

Before Farabeau (85kg) and Bristol (94kg) stepped onto the platform yesterday, Seychelles had won 10 medals – six silver and four bronze.

Kathsia Télémaque, who has made a comeback to the sport after a very long lay-off, finished with an Olympic total of 115kg (50kg in snatch and 65kg in clean & jerk) in the women’s -53kg category.

Mauritian Roilya Ranaivosoa was untouchable in this category as he totaled 180kg (80kg in snatch and 100kg in clean & jerk) and Lehohla Mapolinyane of Lesotho was third with an Olympic total of 78kg (38kg in snatch and 40kg in clean & jerk).

But interestingly enough, the same performance earned Télémaque three gold medals in the Mauritius International Open.

On Tuesday, Chakira Rose was in action in the women’s +75kg class and she clinched three silver medals behind an Algerian.

Fresh from winning three bronze medals in the +63kg weight category at the third African Youth Games in Algeria with an Olympic total of 125kg (55kg in snatch and 70kg in clean & jerk), Rose’s recorded performance was 55kg in snatch and 75kg in clean & jerk for an Olympic total of 130kg.

She was placed fourth in the Mauritius International Open won by a Cameroonian who could not take part in the African Senior Weightlifting Championship as she had not made known her whereabouts to the World Anti-doping Agency Wada.

In the men’s category of the African Senior Weightlifting Championships, Rick Confiance captured two silver medals and a bronze in the 69kg class. After lifting 108kg in snatch for a silver medal, he finished with a best lift of 140kg in clean & jerk for a bronze medal. But his Olympic total of 248kg earned him his second silver medal behind Karem Ben Hnia of Tunisia who clinched victory with a total of 320kg. Dinesh Pandod of Mauritius was third with 242kg in total.

Seychellois Confiance finished with three bronze medals in the Mauritius International Open.

As for Daryl Riaze, he won three bronze medals – 80kg snatch, 100kg clean & jerk and 180kg Olympic total – in the men’s 62kg event of both the African Senior Weightlifting Championships and the Mauritius International Open.

Mauritian Jonathan Coret triumphed in this category with a total of 241kg and he was followed in second place by Algerian Abd El Kader Ain Ouazane with 239kg.

Angelo Servina was also in action in the men’s 77kg class and he was ranked seventh in both the African Senior Weightlifting Championship and Mauritius International Open.
