Dance students trot to Thailand |16 August 2018

Fifteen students from the School of Dance left the country yesterday to attend a two-week dance workshop in Thailand.

The students, aged 11 and above, have been selected from the schools of dance on both Mahé and La Digue island based on their performance and commitment.

They are accompanied by four dance instructors from the schools on Mahé, two instructors from La Digue as well as two parents.

Once in Thailand, they will take part in various activities and will have the opportunity to learn new choreography including ballet, traditional Thai dance, hip hop and jazz alongside Thai dance students. Yoga will also be included on the programme.

Head of School of Dance Daniella Rose said this trip will mark the third time that the school will be attending a dance workshop in Thailand.

“We try to arrange international workshops every two years as a reward for our students and also an opportunity for learning.  For most of these students, it is their first time travelling for dance,” she said.

The group will be showcasing two traditional Seychelles dances and another piece of contemporary dance for an audience of 200 people on August 22.

She added that the trip has been financed by the parents of the students and also some contributions by the school itself and the Ministry of Local Government, Home Affairs, Youth, Sports and Culture.

Dance student Antonia Ah-Kon has been taking classes at the school for 12 years. She said she is excited for the trip as it will be an opportunity to experience and learn a new culture. She has previously attended a dance workshop with the school in South Africa and recounts that it was a fun experience.

Another student, Rio Damoo aged 13 years, also expressed his excitement for his first international dance workshop.

“We have been training six days a week for the performance and we are all looking forward to showcasing our talent,” he said.

The group will spend 13 days in Thailand and are set to return to Seychelles on August 28.
