Stakeholders in education discuss post-secondary courses on offer |16 August 2018

The information and discussion session on Tuesday

Heads of professional centres, head teachers of secondary schools, career teachers -- primarily those teaching at S5 level -- gathered at the Ministry of Education Hall on Tuesday morning for an information and discussion session.

The discussions were led by the advisor in the Ministry of Education, Selby Dora.

Such discussions are held every year to share information with the schools in preparation for application, selection and admission of new students to the different approved programmes of study being offered by the various professional centres next year.

Mr Dora explained that the only thing new in this year’s process is the coming together of heads or key representatives of all the different professional centres, the principal of the School of Advanced Level Studies (Sals), head teachers and career teachers to discuss and clarify all other issues related to courses the different centres will be offering.

“This will allow all parties to speak the same language when it comes to passing information to students and their parents, thus minimising if not removing all the confusions and doubts they may have,” Mr Dora stated.

The discussion session is in preparation for the subsequent meetings the secondary schools will be having with the students and their parents and also to allow S5 students aspiring to apply for a course at either Sals or any other professional centres to liaise directly with the centres to clarify any lingering doubts and confusion.

Mr Dora said it is very important that the information that goes out to students and their parents are not conflicting but are clear and without confusion.

Meanwhile an information booklet for students eligible to apply for the approved programmes of study at the different professional centres next year, has already been dispatched to all schools to allow both students and parents to go through during the holidays.

The different parties at the meeting on Tuesday also had in their possession the same booklet from which they sought clarification from the different professional centres in readiness for pupils and parents’ queries.

Among the different issues that were raised during the meeting was access to other programmes of study not listed in the booklet, the different centres’ intake figures, among others.
