Seychelles Heritage Foundation hosts holiday activities |22 August 2018

During the school vacation, the Seychelles Heritage Foundation (SHF) usually hosts educational and cultural activities for students. These activities enable participants to get in touch with their cultural side and get to know more about what their ancestors did in the past.

This holiday, the activity began on Tuesday August 21, 2018 and is expected to end tomorrow, Thursday August 24, 2018. It is being held at the Domaine de Val des Prés at Au Cap.

Elga Laudelout-Rose, the senior education and information officer at SHF, says that they integrate this activity while students are in their heritage clubs during school time.

She noted that the activities are held during every school holidays -- in April, August and December.

“For this holiday, our activity is ongoing for three days, and we are recycling cut-off cloths as we say in Creole, Retay Sifon, and setting up traditional home gardens,” says Mrs Laudelout-Rose.

She added that during the three-day activity, the students will learn more on planting and growing different local plants in a home garden.

“SHF aims to develop the awareness among the children so that they may understand their heritage, their traditions and their culture,” noted Mrs Laudelout-Rose.

During the three-day programme, participants are placed into three small groups whereby the facilitators help them to discover more about their culture and traditions.

Two groups were already sewing recycled cloths together while another group began learning about different plants such as the local ginger plant, aloe vera and citronella and their use for medical purposes, aroma uses as well as spice delicacies.

The programme has brought together a variety of students coming from primary and secondary schools which have a heritage club.

Our photos show the students learning about recycling cut-off cloths and our medicinal plants during the activity yesterday.
