Paper-cutting works by Seychellois on display |07 August 2013

Works produced by Seychellois art teachers who have just followed a paper-cutting workshop are being displayed at the National Cultural Centre.

Chinese paper-cutting artist Duan JianJun from the Shengle Museum of Inner Mongolia conducted a paper-cutting workshop in Seychelles last week to teach his art to local teachers.

Benjamine Rose, the principal secretary for culture, said she is amazed by the quality of work done in one week, which shows the skills and knowledge acquired in such a short period of time.

Hoping to see more such training for artists in the future, she thanked Mr Duan and the Chinese embassy for organising the workshop, and also called on the teachers to teach the art to others.
“Go out and improve on what you have learned and pass on the knowledge to others, as paper-cutting is something we do not usually see,” she said.

The teachers have indeed expressed the desire to share the newly learned art, which they have described as “simple and cheap”, to other students, as echoed by André Sinon, art teacher from the School for the Exceptional Child:

“We have learned a new form of art and lots of technique by using only scissors. We, Seychellois artists, usually use a cutter instead of a pair of scissors. We have learned that scissors are more appropriate for paper-cutting and as an art tool in general. I intend to organise a mini-workshop at the school in order to initiate fellow teachers and children to this form of art. I am normally a plastician and sculptor, but I have been seduced by paper-cutting as it is a simple form of art; the only things needed being a pair of scissors, used pieces of paper or cardboard and glue. In this case, you do not have to buy canvas, paint and paintbrushes.”

Mr Sinon said paper-cutting is also a good recycling method and is thus encouraging other Seychellois artists to take up this art form.
