Paper-cutting contest proposed |08 August 2013

A paper-cutting competition is being proposed for schools and organisations and all received art works will be displayed in an exhibition during the first Seychelles-China Day celebrations to be launched on January 31, 2014.

It is being proposed that the first three winners will be rewarded with a short-term workshop in China.
The idea came about following talks between the Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St Ange and a famous contemporary Chinese paper-cutting artist from Inner Mongolia Province, Duan JianJun.

He has been in Seychelles since July 30 to conduct workshops for 19 art teachers from various schools in Seychelles and for 30 art students currently following courses in the field of textile and fashion.

Paper cutting is a Chinese national intangible cultural heritage item and an art form which shows vitality and involves grasslands beauty. It remains a means used to strengthen artistic appeal.
Mr Duan studied paper cutting art form from his childhood, and he has accumulated profound cultural literacy related to this art. He is known to have made new developments and breakthroughs in creating a unique style of paper cutting by blending creative aesthetic connotations with the traditional paper cutting art.

This third paper-cutting workshop in Seychelles was held in collaboration with the Chinese embassy in Seychelles and the Chinese Cultural Centre in Mauritius under the Agreement of the Cultural Cooperation between the government of Seychelles and the government of the People’s Republic of China.

Mr Duan said that in the different schools of Seychelles he visited, the students are very interested in paper cutting and they apply themselves very seriously.
He said he could see much from their creation that says Seychelles is a fine example of a pure and mystical environment for the next generations.

He said paper cutting could be another art form that can promote the natural side of Seychelles as this remains an asset for the country.

Minister St Ange and Mr Duan also discussed the opportunities for Seychellois students and art teachers to develop their creativity through the art of paper cutting.

Minister St Ange thanked Mr Duan for his support for his ministry and expressed his deep appreciation for the personal input by Mr Duan in sharing his expertise and passion.
