Basketball: League championship-Stars, Mont Fleuri, Baya and Cobras sweep match-ups |06 July 2004

There were wins for Anse Etoile Stars, Mont Fleuri, Baya and Premium Cobras who swept their match-ups against Juniors, Hot Shots, MBU Rockers and Beau Vallon Heat in the women's and Men division 1A leagues.

On Sunday July 4 defending women's champions Stars, who had won the first round encounter 75-13, came up against a much-improved Juniors but still won on an 87-32 score to make sure of sweeping their tie in the two-round women's League.

Coach Michel Malbrook's Stars, being more experienced than the players of coaches Patricia Samynadin and Steve Hoareau, were able to win the first, third and fourth quarters for their seventh win in eight matches.

Juniors, who matched the Stars 14-14 in the second quarter, could only score two points through their top scorer Prisca Julienne (14 points) in the fourth quarter. Versatile Jennifer Bonne was Juniors' second best scoer with 12 points.

As for the Stars, who were missing captain Simone Asba and Geneviève Beaudoin, they were led in scoring by Simone Malbrook with 36 points in a match during which referee Tracey Moustache and umpire Curtis Marday called just eight fouls – four for each team.

The Stars had three other players – Lucia Souffe (15), Magdeline Julienne (12) and Zita Siméon (11) – in double figures.

Mont Fleuri 58 ... Hot Shots 49

With only five players dressed up for their match against Mont Fleuri, Hot Shots needed a miracle to overcome coach Lenny Aglaé's team last Saturday July.
With veteran captain Williana Dubois pacing them with 19 points, Mont Fleuri, who also got 13 points from Tracey Moustache and 11 from Bernadette Songor, won the match 58-49.
Hot Shots' Jenita Toussaint finished as the game's top scorer with 22 points, 12 of which came from beyond 3-point range, but her efforts went to waste in the defeat.

Baya 52 ... MBU Rockers 47

Trailing MBU Rockers 22-28 at half-time, Baya outscored their opponents 16-5 in the third quarter to run away with victory on a 52-47 score last Saturday in a Men division 1A clash.
Captain Dave Roseline netted eight of his 11 points in the third quarter but it was Michael Cupidon who had the hot hands for coach Michel Malbrook's Baya with 15 points.
Nigel Sinon led the Rockers in scoring with 16 points.

Premium Cobras 89 ... Beau Vallon Heat 70

In Saturday's other men's top flight encounter, Premium Cobras registered another 19-point difference victory over Beau Vallon Heat.
With swingman Cyril Agrippine netting 19 points, including five 3-pointers, Nigerian power forward scoring 26 and forward Dominic Pillay adding 15, Cobras, who beat the Heat 80-61 in the first round, extended their unbeaten run to eight games with an 89-70 victory.
Hitting nine 3-pointers, including five in a row in the 2nd quarter, Heat's left-handed sharp shooter Danny Bertin led all scores with 29 points in a losing effort.
Meanwhile, in two Men division 1B matches, SMB Razorback beat Praslin Warriors 65-37 on Praslin, while Cascade Bullets walked over Mont Fleuri Dawgz.
