Tie and Dye workshop for art lovers |10 July 2004

According to Vivienne Gonzalve, the visual arts coordinator for Nac, the workshops form part of the Visual Arts Unit's programme launched during the 2004 Arts Festival early in April.

To satisfy different age groups the organisers have decided to have the workshops in two categories –children of 10-17 years and adults 18 years old and upwards.     
 
Facilitating the workshop will be College of the Arts textile instructor Paquerette Lablache Pillay, who said that since she has been on the art scene many people were asking for such ateliers.   

“I am currently working on specific programmes for each category, to make the sessions interesting and creative for children as well as adults," said Ms Lablache Pillay.
Expected to be held twice a week for one month – Monday for adults and Thursday for children – Ms Lablache Pillay said that each session will explore different topics and techniques for tying material, mixing dye, application of dye and others.

Interested participants must collect a form from the Nac as well as pay a contribution fee of R30 for children and R50 for adults.

Contributions are expected to be made before each session as organisers did not believe that everyone interested would care to attend all the sessions, Mrs Gonzalve said.

"There are people who already have some knowledge of Tie and Dye and would be interested only in the advanced sessions as well as those who are beginners, therefore we are giving them the choice of choosing which one and how many they want to attend," she said.

Among the intended workshops proposed to follow Tie and Dye are fabric painting, printing, wood carving as well as forums on artistic subjects and exhibitions.
