Volleyball-Referee Andrew off to Mozambique tomorrow

Andrew, the coach of the Cascade women’s team, has been invited by Swaziland to take International referee Andrewcharge of matches in the group B qualifiers.

In such qualifying competitions, all teams taking part must bring an international referee, and if they don’t have one they have to look for one from another country and pay for all his expenses.

The last time referee Andrew was called upon for international duty was during the Ninth All-Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria, in 2007. He is expected back on Sunday May 24.

Other than hosts Mozambique and Swaziland, Mauritius, Zimbabwe and South Africa will play in the group B qualifiers.

The five teams will meet on a round-robin format in the five-day qualifiers – from May 20-24 – and the top two in the final ranking will go on to the next round where they will meet Egypt and Algeria in group D from July 15-17 in Batna, Algeria.

Group A also comprises five teams – hosts Cameroon, Senegal, Botswana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast – and they will play each other once from June 3-7 for the top two places to meet Kenya and Tunisia in group C during the second phase from July 10-12 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The winners of Africa’s groups C and D will go on to represent the continent in the 20-2010 Fédération internationale de volley-ball (FIVB) Women’s World Championships in Japan. Europe will sent eight representatives, North America six, Asia four and South America two.

Hosts Japan and defending champions Russia will complete the line-up of 24 teams to battle for the title.
