President appoints new chief justice |26 May 2009

The appointment was made following a recommendation by the Constitutional Appointments Authority (CAA), and Mr Egonde-Entende, who is a Ugandan national, will take up his post at the end of August.

In the meantime, Justice Bernardin Renaud will be Acting Chief Justice under Article 128 (1)(a) of the Constitution. Justice Ranjan Perera, who has reached retirement age, will continue as judge only, under Article 132(3) of the Constitution.

Mr Egonde-Entende has significant experience in the reform of judicial systems and computerisation of case administration systems.

He was also involved in setting up an independent judiciary in East Timor, where he served as a judge of the Court of Appeal. 
Mr Egonde-Entende lectured in law at Makerere University in Uganda and was chairman of the law reporting committee of the country’s judiciary.

He also has extensive experience in dealing with cases of drug trafficking while working as a judge in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo.
