Fire-fighters celebrate their day

Mr Brutus addressing the gathering at the launch of activities yesterday to mark Fire Service Day

The event took place at the Fire Brigade base at the Seychelles International Airport, Pointe Larue.

In his opening speech, chief fire officer Marc Brutus said this day is an important occasion that calls for reflection on this noble profession, the challenges faced and improvements that can be made.

He said it is important to reflect on what can be done to provide a better service and contribute to the wellbeing of the nation, be it in aviation, maritime or domestic fire-fighting.

This year was the first time the country’s two main fire-fighting and rescue services units had joined forces to host the event.

Mr Brutus said this collaboration fits in well with this year’s national theme, Koste Seselwa (Come Together Seychellois).
He said a lot of resources have been invested to train and upgrade the workforce, with the aim of enhancing their capabilities and performance to match international standards.

“We continue to pledge our commitment to serve our public and visitors to our shores, even to the extent of risking our lives in the process of saving lives,” said Mr Brutus.

He called on the fire-fighters to continue to uphold values such as discipline and respect, and to show a high level of professionalism in their roles as lifesavers.

Apart from sports activities such as football, volleyball and tug-of-war, a lunch was also planned for the day.

Those who took part in the sports activities were rewarded during a short prizegiving ceremony at the end of the day.
