Assembly speaker congratulates new Indian counterpart |13 June 2009

The new speaker, Meira Kumar, is the first woman to be elected to that post, and Dr Herminie noted that this is a demonstration of the positive developments that have taken place in India with regard to gender equality in government institutions.

Her election is also testimony to her exceptional qualities as a leader and politician, he added.
Dr Herminie also stressed in his letter the importance of maintaining the good bilateral relations between the Parliament of India and the National Assembly of Seychelles.

The assembly has benefited in the past through training programmes hosted by the Bureau of Parliamentary Studies and Training in the Lok Sabha and hopes to send more staff for training and capacity building in the future.

Dr Herminie also offered his best wishes to the people of India following the country’s recent elections.
