Swimming-Austin sisters finish fifth and seventh in 400m IM final |07 September 2011

After clocking 5 minutes 18 seconds (5:18) in the heats earlier in the day, Shrone stopped the clock at 5:15.34 in the final in the afternoon to be placed fifth out of 11 swimmers. Her younger sister Shannon was seventh in 5:24.31.

Zimbabwean swimming legend Kirsty Coventry took the gold medal in 4:44.34 with South Africans Cathryn Meaklim and Bianca Meyer finishing second and third in 4:46.33 and 4:51.20.

In the men’s 200m freestyle, Shane Mangroo could only manage 12th place overall after finishing in 2:14 which is 4 seconds off his personal best.

Ahmed Mathlouthi of Tunisia pipped South African Darian Townsend at the death, winning in 1:48.95. Townsend finished second in 1:49.04 and African record holder Jean Basson clinched bronze in 1:51.06.
