Volleyball: Open youth championship-Anse Royale and Belonie youth championship winners |03 November 2011

The competition, which gathered teams from various secondary schools, was marred by walkovers.

In the girls’ final, Anse Royale beat English River, while Belonie were victorious over La Digue in the boys’ final.

After walking over Anse Boileau in the quarterfinal, Anse Royale beat Praslin 2-0 in the semifinal. The set scores were 25-8 and 25-18.

In the final, Anse Royale came out stronger to outscore their opponents from English River 2-0 (25-21, 25-16).

Before entering the boys’ final, Belonie beat Pointe Larue 2-0 (25-22, 25-14) in the preliminaries, before walking over Beau Vallon in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, they beat Anse Royale 2-0 (25-15, 25-16).

As for La Digue, they advanced straight to the semifinal after walking over Plaisance in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal they eliminated English River 2-0 (25-17, 25-19).

In the final, Belonie won the first set 25-21, before La Digue fought back to win the second 25-20. Belonie came out stronger in the third set which they won 17-15 to win the match 2-1 for the championship title.

According to development officer and official Derrick Andrew, the competition would have been more exciting if there was a better turnout. He explained that all schools were informed early about the tournament and all of them had confirmed their participation. He urged all those involved to take their responsibilities for the benefit of the students and the development of Seychelles’ sports.
