Netball: Primary school tournament-Baie Ste Anne returns as winner

Winners Baie Ste Anne Praslin

Physical education instructors Winsley Laramé and Brigitte Rose really know how to groom these young girls into sportswomen who are very likely to be part of the country’s national teams in the future provided they stay focused on what they have to do.

On Saturday at Victoria Gymnasium, the Baie Ste Anne girls were in a class of their own, easily winning games played over five minutes running times.

In the final, they whitewashed Anse Boileau 8-0 after registering the same score against Anse Aux Pins in the semifinal.

Anse Boileau, who eliminated last year’s winners Pointe Larue 7-4 in the other semifinal, went home with the runners-up trophy and the tournament’s best player prize won by Annabelle Volcère.

Nine teams – Baie Ste Anne, Port Glaud, Pointe Larue, Plaisance, Anse Boileau, Grand Anse Praslin, Anse Aux Pins, Grand Anse Mahe and La Rosière– took part in the half-day tournament. They were divided into two groups of four and five, and played each other on a league basis. The top two teams in each group progressed to the cross-knockout semifinals.

Baie Ste Anne, who conceded just five goals in five games on Saturday after beating Port Glaud 5-0, Plaisance 13-0 and Grand Anse Praslin 3-1 in the group stage but did not play their last pool match against Anse Boileau, also won the tournament in 2009 with an 8-4 over Pointe Larue, who avenged the loss by winning last year’s final on a 9-3 score.

What is really interesting with the Baie Ste Anne team is that physical education instructors Laramé and Rose added just two players to the team who won the Barclays Bank-sponsored primary school tournament played on Monday October 31 at the Palais des Sports. They beat Anse Royale 20-2 in the final.
