In the final played on Friday at the Mont Fleuri squash court, Suleman defeated Rod Thorington 3-1 to take home the last title of the 2011 season.

After losing the first set 7-11, a more experienced and fitter Suleman put his game together to win the next three sets 11-6, 11-7 and 11-6.

Suleman praised his opponent for his outstanding display, despite his inferior physical condition and experience level.
“It does not matter who wins, as long as there are competitions and we are playing and having fun,” he added.

Suleman also said his target for next season is to win all the competition he takes part in.

Thorington outlasted Ridvan Prosper to bank his first squash title – the HSI Life knockout – with a 3-1 (4-11, 12-10, 11-6, 117) score in September.

In the development final, Shiv Kumar came from a set down to beat Ramesh Krishnan 3-1 (1-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-3) to emerge as champion.

Meanwhile, the SQA has announced its best players for the 2011 season. Rod Thorington is the best male player, while Eva Alphonse topped the women’s group. Jasper Gilbert is the best junior player.

Association chairman Philip Morgan said 2011 has been a very difficult season for them in terms of sponsors as the country hosted the 8th Indian Ocean Island Games.

He said they managed to host only two competitions. As for next year, Mr Morgan said the association is planning on inviting a coach from England to conduct sessions for the junior players.
