Ms Rose said the Nac acknowledges the fact from outcomes of the art symposium that not all the plans and targets set in the strategic plan 2009-2011 have been achieved. She explained that they need to have a clearer target and this is why they are analysing the recommendations made during the art symposium to see what is achievable within a certain time-frame.
“If we see that the recommendations are more feasible within a three-year plan then we will opt for it. If, however, the indications are more favourable for a five-year plan then this is what we will do,” she added.
Towards a more efficient creative industry
With the aim of moulding a more creative industry, the Nac, in collaboration with the culture department in the Ministry of Social Development and Culture, is conducting a survey to gather ideas and propositions to bring in maximum input of the arts in the country’s economy.
Results of the survey which include all active stakeholders involved in the arts will help set up protective policies to deal with constraints and opportunities for artists involved in other industries, such as tourism. It will also include terms and conditions.
Results of the survey will be compiled, assessed and worked on by two consultants from the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) to draft policies which will give local artists a strong voice.
International exchanges
Visual artist Alcide Libanotis took part in the Africa-China Art Exhibition in China’s Jiangsu province in November. While there, he took part in an exhibition which followed a two-month artist-in-residence programme organised under the aegis of the Forum of Cooperation China-Africa.
The Ministry of Social Development and Culture, the Nac and the Chinese Embassy all contributed in realising the trip.

Three other artists – Doris Nourrice and Georges Boniface (visual arts) and Davis Mathiot (performing arts) – also took part in exchange programmes in Mauritius.
Nourrice and Boniface took part in a regional exchange programme under the theme ‘Arts in the forest’, where they spent time in the forest working with natural resources. As for Mathiot, he took part in the ‘Festival de Rire’.

L’Alliance Française, un partenaire fidele des artistes
Outre sa mission principale d’enseigner et de diffuser la langue française, l’Alliance Française de Victoria a aussi pour objectif de promouvoir les échanges culturels et apporte son appui aux artistes locaux, à travers sa programmation culturelle très variée.
Comme chaque année, 2011 n’a pas été une exception. Selon Virginie Dauré, la responsable du développement culturelle à l’Alliance Française, l’année était très chargée, en termes d’expositions, d’ateliers artistiques et des spectacles et animations diverses, entre autres.

Joining the Africa’s Arterial Network
Some 60 artists involved in visual arts, painting, music, design, photography, literature, craft and heritage gathered at the Kaz Zanana to hear about the Africa Arterial Network.
The launch of the Africa Arterial Network took place in the presence of Maggie Otielo of Kenya, network’s coordinator for Eastern Africa.
A 13-member steering committee for Seychelles was elected, with George Camille as chairperson, while Fiona Casey is the treasurer.
The Arterial Network, which collects data and distributes relevant information through a monthly newsletter published in English and French, allows artists to expose their work via on-line blogs.
It conducts many forums for debate, as well as training sessions for various types of artists.
It is mainly funded by the European Union, the Commonwealth Foundation, the Swedish Institute and the Doen Institute of Germany.
