Seychelles’ popular marathon returns for 2012

The Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon will take place on February 26

Seychelles first hosted the marathon in 2008 under the name the Sunyang Eco-Healing Seychelles Marathon.

This Seychelles event is the brainchild of Dong Chang Jeong, the Seychelles Honorary Consul in South Korea, who is also head of the Korean-based Seychelles Tourist Office and is himself a marathon enthusiast.

The Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon is recognised internationally through the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) label. It is organised jointly by the National Sports Council, Seychelles Tourism Board and INOCEAN M&C – a South Korean company headed by Dong Chang Jeong and is also the main sponsor of the event.

For this fifth race, the country is expecting some 300 international runners, as well as hundreds of locals.

On Sunday February 26, runners of the fifth Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon will take to the road from Beau Vallon from 7am, covering the northern and north-eastern areas of Mahe as well as Victoria.

The marathon is structured to provide something for a range of fitness levels.  This follows the fundamentals of the Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon that is to spread the focus beyond mere competition, putting equal emphasis on appreciating exercise and being surrounded by the natural beauty of Seychelles.

Winners of the competition will be awarded with medals and prizes, and all runners who complete the race shall be awarded a T-shirt in addition to their official time certificate.

As tradition, the Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon will be held alongside the Korean night, where you can savour sumptuous Korean cuisine and experience the culture. The Korean night will be held on the evening of February 26 at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Resort & Casino, during which the prize-giving ceremony of the Seychelles Eco-Friendly Marathon will also take place.

The deadline for entry is January 31 for overseas runners and February 15 for locals.
Runners from overseas should contact the National Sports Council at highlevelsports@seychelles.sc or INOCEAN M&C at sey@seychellestour.co.kr for registration.

Local runners are advised to register in person at the National Sports Council.
