The President, who attended the summit in 2011, is expected to make an address on the challenges of small islands states in the face of continuing climate change, as well as key targets for international climate change negotiations in the future.
The Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS), which is in its 12th edition this year, is organised annually by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) since 2001, being an international undertaking that provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge on all aspects of sustainable development.
Over the past ten years, DSDS has emerged as one of the most important forums on global sustainability issues, which brings together important heads of state and governments, academicians, and policy makers to discuss environmental issues.
The theme of DSDS 2012 is ‘Protecting the Global Commons: 20 years post Rio’.
The debates at this DSDS will revolve around the commons and take stock of the situation since the Rio summit of 1992.
The Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2012 will also be attended by the Finnish President Tarja Halonen, and the President of Kiribati Anote Tong, as well as former heads of state and heads of governments, decision-makers from governments, private sector, non-governmental organisations, multi/bilateral organisations, academia and research institutions.
Nobel Laureate Dr Elinor Ostrom (Professor, Columbia University, USA), former deputy Prime Minister of the UK, John Prescott, and the former Governor of California (USA), Arnold Schwazenegger, will also address the conference.
