Seychelles marks World Wetlands Day |02 February 2012

The event will include a boardwalk tour in the mangrove area and presentation of certificates of recognition to representatives of different hotels who are contributing towards wetlands management and conservation.

Apart from the principal secretary and staff of the environment department, the event will be attended by hotel representatives and school children from Mahe, Praslin and La Digue.

This half-day programme is being organised by the Wetland Unit of the Environmental Engineering & Wetland Section, with the support of different sponsors, like Inter Island Boat Services, Ephelia Resort & Spa, MAIA Resort, Four Seasons Resort, Le Domaine De l’Orangeraie, Banyan Tree Seychelles Resort & Spa and La Reserve Hotel.

Seychelles has been celebrating the World Wetlands Day on February 2 each year since 2000 under different themes declared each year by the Ramsar Convention.

Ramsar is the convention on wetlands of international importance aimed at protecting such sites from the impacts of degradation caused by uncontrolled human activities and some natural phenomenon. The convention was established in 1971 in the city of Ramsar in Iran. To date more than 160 countries are parties to the convention and Seychelles became a member in 2005.

Wetlands of international importance amounted to 1976 sites around the world, equivalent to about 1.9 billion hectares and Seychelles boasts three Ramsar sites, which are the Port Launay wetlands, Mare aux Cochons high altitude wetlands and the World Heritage Site Aldabra Atoll.

This year’s theme is “Wetland Tourism – A Great Experience” declared by Ramsar and it focuses on the tourism industry vis-à-vis the wetland environment which offers these enthusiastic visitors a unique experience in discovering its vast biodiversity and natural beauty.

This year’s theme fits well within the Seychelles context with regard to the tourism establishments that have contributed to the protection of wetlands within their premises by managing these areas that blend well within the hotel environment and thus enhancing its values to the benefit of their clients.
