Valentine’s Day reflections-A touch of artistic romanticism |13 February 2012

What I want to write about today though is atmosphere. I don’t want to write about cards or the various different ways to say ‘I love you’.

I’m writing about romantic decor. I’m the type of girl to fall in love with a place and its atmosphere more than people and I thought I’d share some ideas to make this Valentine’s Day (tomorrow) an especially romantic one.

In my opinion bright red and cringing pink is out this season. Why not opt for softer, more romantic hues to usher in a sedating and almost hypnotic touch to your celebrations; rusty browns, wooden hues and soft fire oranges always do the trick and if you are more inclined to be a water loving person think of adding touches of turquoise and aquamarine to your room decor – hey it’s Valentine’s Day people!

Invest in some shell curtains to frame the entrance to the nest and use traditional material such as gold-sprayed ‘balye koko’ and local bamboo and shell ornaments as the main decoration.

Throw out – or store away safely for those who are touchy – any garish and brightly coloured plastic and synthetic flowers. No offence to anyone.

Why not up the atmosphere a little by adding a traditional ‘moustiker’ or mosquito net to the bedroom.

Let it flow over and surround your bed and add to the material some white and yellow frangipani flowers for that elegant feel.

And for that final touch, leave a trail of hibiscus and allamanda flowers – along with a little fairy light or floating candles – leading from the front yard all the way to your cozy hideaway inside the house.

Don’t forget the wine and chocolates. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Make this Valentine’s Day unforgettable

Valentine’s Day (February 14) is only a day away, the day that individuals make the most to show their love and closeness.

Though we get excited about what to buy or prepare for that special day, there are many people who find it impossible to decide how to plan the perfect day. Do not be stressed, these few tips will help you to prepare. All you need is a little creativity to make it an unforgettable day.

Keep your ears open: Should I buy a teddy, chocolates, red roses or that particular perfume? The same question pops up every year as Valentine’s Day nears. Listen to your partner’s interests and you will know what to choose, it may take time but they will surely appreciate.

Be creative: Making the day special does not mean you have to buy the most expensive gift.

A thoughtful gift shows that you have taken the time to consider what is important to him or her and shows that you appreciate his or her interests.

Be sentimental: Another great gift is the sentimental gift. You can take your partner to the restaurant where you went on your first date. Or, if you know that your partner likes a certain restaurant that you do not like, go there for him or her. Make it unique!

Plan ahead: If you are thinking of planning a romantic weekend getaway, ordering a special gift, plan ahead! Don’t wait until the last minute. It's Valentine's Day and everyone is looking to do something special!

Be flexible: Your partner might have different interests so on Valentine’s Day, plan to do something with him/her that he/she enjoys. This will show your partner that you respect and appreciate him /her enough to do those things which he/she enjoys.

Use this special day to remind your partner that even through the busy hours of your daily lives, he or she is still on your priority list.

Make this Valentine’s Day a day to remember!
