Health gets new qualified nurses

They received their certificates and licences from the Nurses and Midwives Council in a ceremony held at the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Diagnostic Centre at the Seychelles Hospital.

Present at the ceremony were health principal secretary Bernard Valentin, chief nursing officer Bella Henderson, the council’s chairperson Maryline Lucas, the World Health Organisation’s Liaison Officer Dr Cornelia Atsyor, among other officials.

The council is the statutory regulatory body with the mandate to govern and regulate the nursing and midwifery practices.

The nurses also received their badges, the Nurses and Midwives Act and Regulations, the code of ethics and professional conduct.

After the presentation, Mrs Lucas welcomed the new graduates into the profession.
She told them to let their code of practice and ethics be their guiding principles.

“You are now responsible and accountable for all your actions and to be very conscious of that.”

The council’s registrar, Winifred Agricole, said all these nurses have followed a three-year diploma course at the National Institute of Health and Social Studies.

She said students who have graduated from the institute does not automatically become a nurse.

“They have to meet the standards set by the council which include proof that they have completed the nursing courses and they must be exemplary.”

Mrs Agricole added that without a registration certificate nursing graduates will not able to practice the profession.

The graduates making their pledge

During the ceremony the nurses also pledged that they will serve humanity and practice their profession with conscience and dignity.
