It’s carnival time in Seychelles

Jean-Marc Volcy and supporting artists performing the carnival theme song

The town was already packed with locals and tourists yesterday afternoon awaiting the official opening of the event which took place under the theme: ‘Melting pot of cultures’.

Stalls with carnival accessories, food, drinks, clothes and toys could be found all over town.

The crowd was able to stroll freely until a little before 6pm when everybody gathered next to the clock tower for the official launch of this vibrant event by Designated Minister Vincent Meriton. This took place in the presence of President James Michel and other high government officials as well as international dignitaries.

After the speeches (see separate story), which marked the official part of the ceremony, a cheerful crowd applauded this year’s carnival theme song ‘Sa Karnaval’ performed by Jean Marc Volcy and supporting local artists.

There were more cultural manifestations by local and international groups and individuals from Reunion, Germany, Indonesia. Guest artists included Michael Quinn and the Bourbon Kings from the United States, François Dal’s from Reunion, Lima Calbio of Trinidad and Tobago.

The party will continue today at 2.30pm with the main highlight of the Carnaval International de Victoria which is the colourful procession. This parade will start on the Bois de Rose Avenue and will proceed from Latanier Road, passing in front of the National Cultural Centre where those taking part will showcase their first display to the VIPs and guests.

Routes will pass in front of cable & Wireless, the clock tower, taxi stand, Camion Hall, STC, Deepam’s, P&J Supplies, SPTC bus terminal, Orion Mall, turning right in front of Caravelle House. A selection of floats will enter Freedom Square while the remainder will go through the Bicentenary Monument roundabout, passing in front of the children’s playground to the IDC car park where the parade will end.

Later on at 5pm, the Zez group and dancers will entertain outside Stad Popiler. The day will end with a grand open air disco in Victoria.

The carnival will come to a close on Sunday with a family fun day on Freedom Square.
