Basketball: Curtain-raiser competition-Mont Fleuri sink Stars in extra-time to reach final |15 March 2012

Over time was needed to decide the finalists after the match was tied at 52 points apiece at the final whistle.

It all started well for the Stars who were in the driving seat with a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter after getting seven points from captain Simone Malbrook. With some good advice from coach Tony Juliette, Mont Fleuri , however, managed to step up their game in the second quarter which they won 20-10 on the back of seven points from their Canadian player Paddy Magill, who was playing her last match for the team. Mont Fleuri led 28-24 at half-time.

With six points from Genevieve Beaudoin, Anse Etoile managed to close the gap and trailed by a single point – 39-40– at the end of third quarter.

Stars scored another 13 points, compared to 12 for Mont Fleuri in the final quarter, ending the match on a 52-52 tie.
In over-time, Anse Etoile stars managed to score only six points, while Mont Fleuri got nine, bringing the final score to 61-58.

Williana Dubois had the hot hands for Mont Fleuri with 17 points, while Janna Malbrook was Stars’ top scorer with 15 points.
Mont Fleuri now await the winners of the second semifinal match between HotShots and RA Sisters scheduled for tomorrow.
