Soroptimists host fun-filled day for La Solitude girls

Hannah Charlot receives her cake and gift as the gathering sing ‘Happy Birthday’

Erica Naidoo, the club’s president, said the members wanted to organise an activity for this year’s International’s Women’s Day celebrated on March 8.

Therefore the girls from La Solitude convent were chosen and the Soroptimist members went on to find sponsors to organise this activity and to find donations to meet the needs of these young residents.

During the lunch, the girls -- who were accompanied by the nuns and staff of La Solitude -- received a donation of several items such as toiletries, stationeries, food and R400 for each girl to buy a pair of shoes. The club has also donated a wardrobe at the convent.

Doris Khambatta, one of the sponsors, handed over the donations to Sister Susan.
On behalf of the La Solitude residents, Sister Susan thanked the Soroptimist members for organising the lunch and for taking into account the needs of these young girls.

The club’s lottery was also launched and proceeds will go towards cancer related projects and other charitable activities.
Tickets cost R10 each and the draw will be held on August 4, 2012. There are 30 prizes which includes two return tickets to any Qatar destination and US $600 as first prize.

Other prizes include jewellery, cash, electronic items, furniture, and dinner vouchers among many others.
Mrs Naidoo thanked all sponsors who have made a contribution towards the lottery.

She also thanked all those who have contributed in helping the club to organise the lunch and the donated items to meet the needs of the convent.

She said Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay was the main sponsor of the activity and thanked its general manager Ken Choo for hosting the lunch for the girls.

Hannah Charlot, who was celebrating her 14th birthday, received a gift and a cake from the Soroptimist members.
