Oil pollution tests results expected today |09 April 2012

The department had to mobilise resources to clean what was believed to be lubricating oil used to clean ship engines and which was floating on the water near the Yacht Club.

Julianna Leggaie, director for standards & enforcement in the department, told Seychelles Nation yesterday that since they were alerted about the pollution they worked tirelessly to stop the oil from spreading.

From Thursday till late on Friday the yellowish substance was pumped from the area and after a final inspection on Saturday it was believed to have been cleaned completely.

Ms Leggaie said samples are being analysed to determine its source.
She said the environment department is working with the Seychelles Port Authority to find out who is responsible for the oil spill.
