‘Recommended Retail Price’ not compulsory, says FTC |21 April 2012

Recommended Retail Price is a common practice by many manufacturers and/or suppliers in many countries for many products and services. Recommended Retail Price is the price that a particular enterprise proposes to other retailers or enterprises to sell its products or services at.

“Recommended Retail Price IS NOT a compulsory selling price. Retailers can sell their products either higher or lower than the recommended price or, in other words, retailers are free to sell the product at other prices different to the recommended retail price,” says the FTC communiqué.

“A supplier may recommend a resale price for goods or re-supply price for services, provided that the document/advert setting out the recommended price makes it clear that it is a recommended price and that the supplier takes no action to influence the reseller not to sell or resupply below or above that price,” adds the communiqué.

The communiqué notes that FTC’s function is not to regulate prices and that in a liberalised economy such as Seychelles, market prices reflect the DEMAND by consumers and SUPPLY by enterprises of particular products.
