Policy-makers learn about the importance of culture |27 April 2012

They are doing this in a three-day workshop -- entitled Cultural diversity programming lens toolkit --
which was opened on Wednesday at the Seychelles Trading Company’s conference room.

They are expected to use a cultural diversity lens tool kit as a guide when working on projects and making decisions in their fields.

Present at the opening were the culture principal secretary Benjamine Rose and special advisor for culture Raymonde Onezime, the culture consultant leading the workshop Nicole Bolomey from Dar es Salaam United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), ambassador Bernard Shamlaye and Marie-Reine Hoareau, the secretary general national commission to Unesco.

Also present was local consultant Peter Pierre Louis.
This meeting, which is being run from April 25-27, has been organised by the culture department in partnership with Unesco.

Miss Rose said the Ministry of Tourism and Culture is very much aware of the value and importance of culture, and the way it affects our development.

“It is essential that we are making the effort to instill the value of culture and its effects in our development projects especially in the National Mid-Term Strategy: 2013-2017 which will be drafted by the Foreign Affairs Ministry.”

Mrs Hoareau said the workshop is in line with Unesco’s main line of action for culture programme mainstreaming within national policies of the links between cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and sustainable development.

Ms Bolomey said the cultural diversity programming lens is a tool developed by Unesco to analyse and evaluate whether policies, programmes and practices promote the concept and principles of cultural diversity.

She said this tool will work well in the Seychelles context and has been used over the years by many countries.

Ms Bolomey added that the importance of culture in development is being stressed greatly nowadays.

The cultural diversity programming lens provides a new way of seeing and thinking about cultural diversity issues.

It is designed to be used by policy-makers, programme managers and community leaders who work in both non-culture and culture related sectors.

During the workshop delegates are expected to learn how to use the cultural diversity lens for policy development and the role of culture in development sectors.
