Basketball: National League-Cobras, Hawks extend win run

Mont Fleuri’s Songor performs a block on HotShots’ AgathineAll the action was at the Victoria Gymnasium last weekend as a good crowd watched the matches on schedule.

Premium Cobras 76 … Mont Fleuri Dawgz  73

Premium Cobras had trouble distancing themselves from Mont Fleuri Dawgz, losing the first quarter 18-21 with Sergio Ah-Kong sinking a buzzer-beater 3-pointer but they did go for the breather with a three-point advantage – 37-34 – after going on a 16-2 run inside six minutes.

Coach Peter Bresson’s team again fell behind after losing the third quarter 15-20, trailing the Dawgz by two points – 52-54 – at the end of 30 minutes of play. With floor leader Amadou Sylla scoring nine of his game-high 25 points, including 16 free-throws, in the fourth 10-minute spell which the Cobras won 24-19, the leaders extended their unbeaten run to five games with a 76-73 win.

Power forward Dominic Pillay added 16 points and playmaker Christopher ‘Toto’ Camille got 15 in the Cobras’ win as coach Bresson celebrated.

“We don’t have one of the best teams in the league, but we are playing as a team,” former player Bresson told Sports Nation.

“This is what the previous Premium Cobras team of the past two years lacked. Our objective is the league title, but we are taking each game at a time,” added Bresson.

Steven André had the hot hands with 22 points for the Dawgz whose three-game win run came to an end.

PLS Hawks 94 … MBU Rockers 78

Nigerian Alao Solomon was on fire for PLS Hawks with 41 points in the 94-78 win over MBUI Rockers who have to go back to the drawing boards to find a way to stop the five-game skid.

Centre Rodney Lozé added 19 points for the Hawks whose skipper Bernard Bristol fouled out in the team’s fourth win on the trot for 12 points – the same total as Baya who were not in action at the weekend but play Anse-Boileau-based Angels this afternoon.

Playmaker and captain Nigel Sinon tried his best to carry his team out of the doldrums, but his 25 points against the Hawks went to waste in yet another loss.

Mont Fleuri 59 … HotShots 52

Bernadette Songor kept her cool and finished with 21 points for Mont Fleuri in the 59-52 victory against HotShots who hung close until late in the fourth quarter.
Coached by Tony Juliette, the Mont Fleurians won the second and fourth quarters 18-16 and 19-5 on the way to their second victory for four points in the women’s league which is proving to be very exciting this year.

Centre Lenny Morel, formerly Aglaé, has sent a warning to defending champions Anse Etoile Stars whom they play this coming Saturday.

“Beware Anse Etoile Stars, we will be all out to get a win against you too,” said Morel.
As for Anse Boileau-based HotShots, who got 21 points from centre Tina Agathine in their first loss in three games, they have five points to lead the standings.

Juniors 26 … RA Sisters 77

Veteran Lina Lestrange proved that age is just a number as she led all scoring with 24 points in RA Sisters’ 77-26 victory against inexperienced Juniors who have lost all their three games.

RA Sisters used Saturday’s game to open their win account after having lost their previous three matches.

Meanwhile, in the men’s division two, Beau Vallon Heat beat Cadets 96-34 and leaders Razors travelled to Praslin and suffered a 69-74 defeat at the hands of Praslin Warriors.
