Labour ministry refutes Today in Seychelles article |28 June 2012

A communiqué from the ministry said its officials visited the workers on June 20 and also on Tuesday this week and it was verified that the report is definitely false.
 
“Water interruption at this time of year is normal, due to shortage of this utility that is being controlled by PUC.

 The workers on site confirmed with officials that they are being provided food, and there was no complaint with regards to electricity interruptions by the workers,” said the communiqué.

The communiqué further noted that officials from this ministry are visiting the workers regularly to ensure that they are being fairly treated.

It said mediation regarding registration of the grievance lodged by the 92 Indian Workers with Trojan General Contractor L.L. C was scheduled for Friday June 22, 2012 at 9am and that both parties were present for the mediation.
 
“Following discussion, the mediation was postponed to allow the workers to decide whom they are to bring as their employer, as there are two companies involved with the workers; The Trojan L.L.C and M.I.N (Pty) Ltd.,” noted the communique.

The communiqué added that the department initiated legal action against Trojan General Contractor L.L.C for non compliance with the department’s directive to effect payment of salary of the workers within a time limit given to do so.

 The case was first mentioned before the Employment Tribunal on Monday June 25, 2012 at 10am and postponed to today, Thursday June 28, 2012, with both parties’ consent.
