Centenarians celebrate their birthdays

Mrs Hoareau and Mr Dick on the day they celebrated their birthdays

Mrs Hoareau’s birthday bash took place on Tuesday at her granddaughter’s house at Roche Bois, and also there to give her good wishes was district administrator for St Louis Sibylla Mederick.

Mrs Hoareau, born on July 10, 1910, has seven children -- two of whom have passed away, 40 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Her mother, Aline Amelie Houareau, also lived to celebrate her 102nd birthday, reaching the ripe old age of 109.

Similarly, the oldest senior citizen in Les Mamelles district, Mr Dick, celebrated his 101st birthday on Monday with a mass attended by family, friends, member of the National Assembly for Les Mamelles Emmanuel Fideria and district administrator Doris Kiwale at Mr Dick’s home.

Mr Dick, who was a cook, was born on July 9, 1911 and has spent most of his life working on vessels where he got the chance to visit many islands. Six of his 10 children were born in Diego Garcia.

Mr Dick has 26 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 41 great great grandchildren.
Just like other centenarians, Mrs Houareau and Mr Dick both received a special birthday gift and message from President James Michel which was given to them as well as a medal marking their new milestone.

Members of the Senior Citizens Association from both districts were also present at the celebrations.
