Volleyball: National League-Premium Spikers extend unbeaten run, Cascade shoot to the top |18 July 2012

All action was at the Palais des Sports with six of the nine matches on the programme finishing on 3-0 scores.

Cascade needed just 50 minutes and three sets – 25-6, 25-14 and 25-14 – to inflict a ninth defeat on winless Santa West to go top of the eight-team women’s division one league standings with 25 points from eight wins in nine matches.

Defending champions Friends also registered a 3-0 win but needed more time – 103 minutes – to fight off the challenge of OSC Comets with a 25-12, 25-20, 25-17) score for their seventh victory in eight outings for 22 points.

With a match in hand on both Cascade and La Digue, Friends have 22 points, while OSC Comets are a place from bottom with 10 after registering just one win in eight games.

The other places are being held by former champions Arsu (fourth with 18 points after five wins and three losses), Juniors (fifth with 14 points after three wins and five losses) and Praslin Volleyball Club (sixth with 11 points after two wins and seven losses).

In the men’s top flight, coach Bernard Denis’ Premium Spikers made easy meat of bottom team Anse Royale, dispatching them 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-9) in 55 minutes. While the victory was Premium Spikers’ seventh in a row, the defeat was Anse Royale’s seventh consecutive.

Challengers and current runners-up Beau Vallon recovered from a set down to beat Racing Club 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-18) after 142 minutes of play to bring their points tally to 19 with six wins and a defeat.

Neo Boyz registered only their fourth victory in seven games with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-20) score against Praslin-based BSA Spikers to move into third place with 15 points.

Racing Club (13 points after three wins and four losses), BSA Spikers (6 points after one win and six losses) and Anse Royale (5 points after seven losses) are occupying fourth, fifth and sixth places on the table.

Meanwhile, in the only women’s division two game played, Mont Fleuri garnered their third win with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 16-25, 25-22) score against St Louis Bombers.

In the men’s lower league, Outsiders put an end to La Digue’s seven-game unbeaten run. Trailing by two sets, Outsiders made a formidable comeback to beat La Digue 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-13) in a marathon encounter that lasted 142 minutes.

Despite winning, Outsiders stay second on the table with 19 points – three less than leaders La Digue who also beat Cadets 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-16) in their other match at the weekend.

Juniors pulled off a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-14) victory against Air Waves to move to third position with 13 points.
