Premium Spikers close in on title, women’s top league wide open-Volleyball: National League |03 August 2012

Under the guidance of experienced coach Bernard Denis, Premium Spikers took only 58 minutes to send Praslin-based BSA Spikers packing with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-10) win last weekend at the Palais des Sports.

Captain Jean-Paul Lepathy and company have a maximum 24 points – five more than former league winners Beau Vallon who have a match in hand after not playing last weekend.

Beau Vallon’s next match is tomorrow against BSA Spikers who are a place from bottom with just one win in eight games.

Racing Club moved into third place with an 88-minute 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20) victory over winless Anse Royale to bring their points tally to 16 (four wins and four defeats in eight games).

Not in action last weekend, Neo Boyz, who like Beau Vallon have a match in hand on the other teams, are fourth with 15 points (four wins and three defeats in seven games).

Women’s division one defending champions Friends eased to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-18, 25-16) 60-minute win over lowly Santa West who have gone 10 games without a win and look doomed to relegation.

With 25 points from eight wins and a defeat in nine games, Friends look good for their own title defence but La Digue and Cascade are also championship materials.

Under the guidance of coach Nichol Lesperance – the man behind Arsu’s early league title wins in the early 1990s – La Digue are leading the eight-team standings with 26 points after amassing eight wins and conceding two defeats.

As for Cascade, despite boasting the same win-lose record (8-1) and number of points (25) like Friends, they are currently third because of an inferior set score difference. They have a difference of +19 sets (26 for and 7 against), while Friends have a difference of +21 sets (26 for and 5 against).

Former champs Arsu are in fourth place with 21 points and they earned their sixth victory in nine games with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-22) score against Praslin Volleyball Club (PVC).

In fact, sixth-placed PVC lost twice last weekend, bringing their number of defeats to eight in 10 games , when they were whitewashed 0-3 (15-25, 24-26, 22-25) by Juniors who are occupying fifth place in the standings with 17 points (four wins and five defeats).

OSC Comets are in seventh position with 10 points after collecting just one win in eight games and they will be gunning for a second victory against Arsu tomorrow.

In the women’s division two, Rainbow can extend their winning run to 11 games tomorrow when they meet Mont Fleuri and on Sunday leaders Roots Sisters will play St Louis Bombers who took just 55 minutes to beat Bel Ombre 3-0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-15) last weekend.

Tied on points – 22 – and boasting the same win-lose record of 7-1, Outsiders and La Digue will clash tomorrow in the men’s division two.

Except for the men’s bottom division which is being played over three rounds, the men’s division one, women’s division one and women’s division two will be decided after two rounds of matches.
